Venture finance group Apax Partners has made its first investment in a web services startup, providing $2m in seed funding for Corporate Oxygen (a venture so early-stage that its domain is today still parked at the registrar). This is notable not only as the first web services investment by Apax but also because the startup's founders are the former driving force and chief architects of HP's E-Speak initiative, a visionary web services project that ultimately proved to be too far ahead of its time.

Avinon cements alliance with Microsoft
I've always felt that web services management software vendor Avinon has an astute vision of where web services are headed.
